To extend or NOT to extend?
The quick and simple answer to this pressuring question ( in our opinion) is YES!
As a bride, we know how important it is to feel and look your absolute best on your wedding day. For many brides, achieving that perfect bridal hairstyle means incorporating hair extensions. Whether you’re looking for extra volume, length, or texture, the right set of extensions can totally transform your hair and take your wedding day look to the next level. With so many options out there, though, it can be overwhelming to choose the best ones for your big day. Here’s my guide to help you navigate through different types of hair extensions, how to make sure they fit your natural hair, and ensure they stay in place all day long.
1. Types of Hair Extensions
There are several options to consider when it comes to hair extensions, depending on your desired look, how long you want them to last, and how much movement your hairstyle will involve.
Clip-in Extensions: These are perfect if you want to add volume or length for just the day. However, it's important that they are applied correctly to avoid any lumps or discomfort – don't worry, I’ll make sure everything is in place so you can feel comfortable all day!
Tape-in Extensions: If you're looking for something more semi-permanent, tape-ins are a great option. They lay flat against your natural hair, making them super discreet. These are perfect if you plan to wear your hair down or in a style with a lot of movement because they blend seamlessly and stay put.
Sew-in/Weft Extensions: If you’re going for a longer-term look, sew-in extensions are a fantastic choice. They're great for achieving a thicker, fuller look, though they do require a bit more maintenance over time. They’re ideal if you want volume that lasts longer than a single day!
Fusion or Bonded Extensions: For a long-lasting, more permanent style, fusion extensions might be for you. However, the bonds can be a bit heavy and might not be as comfortable for everyone. If you’re considering these, we’ll discuss comfort and make sure they’re a good fit for your needs.
2. Color Match
Color matching is key to making sure your extensions blend naturally with your hair. If the extensions don’t match your natural color perfectly, it could be noticeable, especially in photos. We’ll make sure the tone of the extensions complements your natural shade so that your hair looks flawless.
I’ll also make sure that the extensions blend into the layers of your natural hair. The goal is for everything to merge smoothly without any noticeable lines where the extensions start. This will give you a truly natural and beautiful look.
3. Texture
It’s important to choose extensions that match your natural hair texture. If you have curly or wavy hair, I'll make sure the extensions I choose for you match that texture. If you have straight hair, I’ll use straight extensions. Otherwise, you may need extra time styling to make sure everything blends cohesively.
4. Comfort and Fit
Since you’ll be wearing the extensions for hours on your wedding day, it’s super important that they’re comfortable. If they’re too heavy, they could pull or tug, and we don’t want that on your special day! I'll ensure your extensions are lightweight and feel comfortable throughout your entire celebration.
It's also essential that your extensions stay securely in place. Whether you’re going with clip-ins, tape-ins, or sew-ins, I’ll make sure they’re properly applied and won’t slip or move as you celebrate with your loved ones.
5. Trial Run
A trial session is a MUST! It’s the perfect opportunity to see how the extensions will look and feel with your wedding hairstyle. We’ll experiment with different styles to make sure everything holds up well, and you’ll have the chance to make any adjustments before your big day.
We’ll also see how your natural hair reacts to the extensions. Are they too heavy? Do they show through when styled? The trial session allows us to make sure everything is perfect before your wedding day.
6. Wedding Day Style
Your extensions will help determine the style you choose for your wedding day. For example, if you’re planning on an updo, extensions will help hold your style in place better than natural hair alone. If you’re wearing your hair down, extensions can give you that extra volume and length while still looking effortless.
Think about how active you’ll be on your wedding day. If you plan to dance a lot, hug guests, or take photos outside, you'll want extensions that stay secure without feeling heavy or uncomfortable.
7. Budgeting for Extensions
When it comes to your wedding beauty budget, it's important to factor in the cost of extensions. Prices can vary depending on the type of extensions and the experience of your stylist. While quality extensions can be pricey, they’re an investment if you want a flawless, picture-perfect look for your big day. Plus, you can continue to use them after the wedding!
Extra Tips from our Extension Specialist Paulina:
Using extensions to take your bridal hair look to the next level is ALWAYS my number one suggestion for all my bridal clients but I also suggest taking into consideration these extra tips to ensure extensions are the right fit for you:
Consultation: A trial consultation with me is KEY! and highly recommended to see which extension type and installation is right for you. I’m experienced with all types of extensions and will help you choose the right ones for your hair type and wedding style.
Keep It Comfortable: If you’ve never worn extensions before, it might be helpful to keep your wedding hairstyle simple, like soft waves or a loose updo, to avoid feeling overwhelmed by extra hair.
Consider Hairpieces: If you’re concerned about the weight, volume of extensions or concerned about sparseness at the crown of your head; a lightweight solution like a hairpiece could be a great alternative to achieve your desired look without too much commitment.
“At the end of the day, whether or not you choose to wear extensions is totally up to you. When done correctly, though, extensions can take your bridal hairstyle to Pinterest level, giving you that flawless, picture-perfect look. I’ll make sure we get everything just right so you can feel confident, beautiful, and ready for your big day!”
